About this site

Desert Highway is a reference for independent filmmakers working in Egypt and the wider region. It is not a production company, an agency or a fund.

What we publish

Practical pages on three subjects: where financing comes from, which festivals and markets are worth the entry, and what actually happens on the ground during a shoot. If a page cannot help somebody make a decision, it does not belong here.

How it is funded

It is not. Nobody pays for placement, no fund or festival has been given sight of a page before publication, and there are no affiliate arrangements with rental houses or service companies.

Dates and figures

We avoid quoting fees, deadlines and exchange rates. They change faster than the pages do, and a filmmaker acting on a stale figure is worse off than one who was told to check. Where a practical page depends on such a figure, it says so and points at who to ask.
