Notes from the road

Independent film in the region

This is a reference, not a magazine. Everything here answers a question somebody actually asked us while trying to finish a film.

Independent production in the region fails in predictable places: money arrives in the wrong currency, a permit takes six weeks instead of two, a festival deadline passes because the entry needed a document nobody mentioned. None of that is creative difficulty. All of it is solvable if you know it is coming.

Funding

Grants, co-production funds and what each one really asks for.

Festivals

Which submissions are worth the fee and which are not.

Production

Permits, crew rates, equipment and getting paid.

If you are at the beginning, read where the first money comes from. If you are in post and stuck, the answer is usually in getting paid — most delays at that stage are financial, not technical.
